Can the Pope be a Heretic and Remain the Pope? Is Francis a Heretic?

Francis: Pope or Anti-Pope?

The question about Francis and his heretical positions was raised in 2019 in an open letter signed by 19 theologians/priests/church leaders. Since then, dozens of others added their names to the letter and thousands of Catholics signed a petition for the bishops of the world to respond to the letter. Today, the information below was on Bishop Rene Gracida's website. Has Pope Francis embraced positions that are "heretical in the strict sense?" And if he has, what is the current state of the papacy? We live in challenging times, friends. In this month of the Sacred Heart let us pray unceasingly for our Church. The flock are immersed in the slough of confusion and sinking and there are few rescuers with ropes and life boats offering help. God save us!

If the pope is a heretic, what then?
- Doctor of the Church St. Francis de Sales totally confirmed beyond any doubt the possibility of a heretical pope and what must be done by the Church in such a situation:
"[T]he Pope... WHEN he is EXPLICITLY a heretic, he falls ipso facto from his dignity and out of the Church, and the Church MUST either deprive him, or, as some say, declare him deprived, of his Apostolic See."
(The Catholic Controversy, by St. Francis de Sales, Pages 305-306)
Saint Robert Bellarmine, also, said "the Pope heretic is not deposed ipso facto, but must be declared deposed by the Church."

- LifeSiteNews, "Confusion explodes as Pope Francis throws magisterial weight behind communion for adulterers," December 4, 2017:
The AAS guidelines explicitly allows "sexually active adulterous couples facing 'complex circumstances' to 'access the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist.'"
- On February 2018, in Rorate Caeli, Catholic theologian Dr. John Lamont:
"The AAS statement... establishes that Pope Francis in Amoris Laetitia has affirmed propositions that are heretical in the strict sense."
- On December 2, 2017, Bishop Rene Gracida:
"Francis' heterodoxy is now official. He has published his letter to the Argentina bishops in Acta Apostlica Series making those letters magisterial documents."
Pray an Our Father now for the restoration of the Church by the bishops by the grace of God.

Will our bishops respond? How about writing to your bishop asking him to support an investigation.  I'll be writing an open letter to my bishop asking him to do so.

  2. Thanks for the laugh, Mary. It must be so hard to be you, filled with so much hate, bitterness, and judgmentalism toward a person you don't even know. I'm having a Mass said for you and praying that God will have mercy on your soul too. We all sure need mercy.

But please save yourself from embarrassment. These comments judging my soul don't reflect well on you at all. I'm curious why you come to the blog. I certainly don't spend any time on yours. And I've never done a post personally attacking you, since I don't even know you. I wouldn't presume to judge the state of your soul.

  3. There is only one sin in the Nervous Ordo Church. And that is the sin of noticing.

  4. Mary Ann, thank you and God bless you for your blog. You are a woman who loves God and loves the faith and is a culture warrior to boot, most admirable. And I love someone who says things in a straightforward manner, so refreshing. Keep up the great work. I am just now reading what anti-Catholic escapades are emanating from Rome this week, and let me just say that while definitions have been stretched since he took the Chair of Peter, if they have stretched so far that we cannot identify not only a heretic but a destroyer, a man with a personal vendetta, against God and against Catholicism and against faithful Catholics, then words have lost their meaning entirely, and our world is utterly mad. He is not merely a heretic, he is an apostate, and he intends to wreck Catholicism in it's entirety and erect in it's shell a Marxist, godless, globalist monster. There are those who "will not see". We are watching in real time, the separation of the goats from the sheep.
One thing is certain. He will not deprive faithful Catholics of the Traditional Latin Rite. We will have it. It will grow. Young families are the future, and they want the TLM. And there's nothing in the world he can do to stop that. Let him rage against God all he wants.

  5. Bergolio is a heretic, always was. He believes in no hell, doesn't believe in the Trinity, profaned Christ and worships demons. He is an antipope, a heretic and is hell bound.

    That isnt "hate" that's fact.

  6. Catholic in Brooklyn and Mary Ann Kreitzer, I am not seeing the hate that you purport to see. I am reading honest questions. Are you afraid of the answers or the questions? If Francis is a heretic, would that shake your faith? I did not read any judgemental statements. Am I missing something here? Please explain. Reading your comments, it appears that the Blogger has touched a nerve.

Mary - it is a kindness to offer a mass for someone. However, it is you who are judging her: "It must be so hard to be you, filled with so much hate, bitterness, and judgementalism..." Very often the splinter we see in the eyes of another are merely reflections at a distance of the beams in our own eyes.

  7. Thank you for your blog. You seem more optimistic than me. I hope you are right and myself wrong. I am afraid that the overwhelming majority of our Cardinals and Bishops are mini-Bergolios. If so, it’s sort of like writing a demon for help with Satan. Please keep up your good work.

  8. Interesting. I know four people who attend the Novus Ordo exclusively who think Francis is an antipope. That notion is getting rather widespread. I think he's an antipope -- if he is the pope, who needs the papacy?

  9. I guess if he is a heretic he should be brutally tortured and murdered, as per Catholic rules. Go crusades on him.

  10. Spoken like an anti-Catholic, info. "Love your enemies; do good to those that hate you."
