The defender of the Faith Dom Prosper Guéranger: Islam Has Long Been a Scourge Against Unfaithful/Heretical Christians
Dom Prosper Gueranger gives us a little bit of a history lesson from Vol. 4 of The Liturgical Year, pp. 168-9, concerning God’s permitting Islam to be the punishment visited upon Christians who fall into persistent error and schism. While written 150 years ago, it may as well have been written for today, when, I am quite certain, Dom Gueranger would be mortified into shocked silence by the specter of a Christendom so utterly devoid of faith and already deeply into the process of being overrun by islam in its very heartland:
When, later on, the Christian nations of the east had lost the Faith which they themselves had transmitted to the western world; when they had disfigured the sacred symbol of faith by their blasphemous heresies; the anger of God sent upon them, from Arabia, the deluge of Mahometanism. It swept away the Christian churches, that had existed from the very time of the Apostles. Jerusalem, the favored Jerusalem, on which Jesus had lavished the tenderest love, even she became a victim to the infidel hordes. Antioch and Alexandria, with their patriarchates, were plunged into the vilest slavery; and at length Constantinople, that had so obstinately provoked the divine indignation, was made the very capital of the Turkish empire.
And we, the western nations, if we return not to the Lord our God, shall we be spared? Shall the floodgates of of Heaven’s vengeance, the torrent of fresh Vandals, ever be menacing to burst upon us, yet never come? Where is the country of our own West, that has not corrupted its way, as in the days of Noah? That has not made conventions against the Lord and His Christ? That has not clamored out that old cry of revolt: “Let us break their bonds asunder, let us cast away their yoke from us?” (Ps ii:3).
Ps. let us not forget the Church of the Multiplication at Tabgha, on the Sea of Galilee, that was torched down in 2015. A fire broke out at , early Thursday in what police suspect was an arson attack...In an entrance corridor of the building, which is believed by Christians to be the site of Jesus’s miracle of multiplying two fish and five loaves to feed 5,000 people, Hebrew graffiti was found, reading, “the false gods will be eliminated” — a quote from the Aleinu prayer [which is mandatory for Orthodox 'Jews' to pray 3 times daily]. Also, just this last January while being on the pilgrimage to Holy Land, they have also burned the Church of Ascension. Also, we have witnessed in the Church of the Assumption of Our Lady to Heaven.....two groups (15 to 20 in each), of young Jewish youth, who came to mock Our Lady, laugh at Catholics who ‘tell lies and deceive others’, explained to us by our guide George (who speaks fluently Aramaic, Hebrew, Arabic, French, and English) born and raised in Jerusalem.....true soldier of Christ! Also in 2012, the words “Jesus is a monkey” in Hebrew were graffitied onto the wall next to the entrance of the Benedictine Abbey of Latroun, two steps away from the highway that connects Jerusalem to Tel Aviv.
They know our last best hope is the Catholic Church and want to rid the world of it, but. . . . . Jesus told us the gates of hell will not prevail. It is truly a shame to see a beautiful building, that was built to glorify God, go up in flames. This evil act is dispicable. .
OjczeNasz3 - Not that I want to disagree with Dom Prosper, but Islam has also been the scourge of good and faithful Christians. I can hardly think that God would want His faithful people to suffer the cruelties of Islam like what is happening now in the Middle East. Islam was born of the devil therefore basically it falls into the realm of "good versus evil" instead of it being a scourge God permitted to punish bad Christians.
@Susan Matthiesen – For Christians the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ teaches us that in life we must be able to accept all suffering for the love of God. Because of SIN, all men are subject to this misery, but only a Christian alone possesses the secret of accepting every kind of suffering for the good of souls, eternal salvation, our sanctity, but above all for the glory of God. Christ commands: “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who persecute and calumniate you.” (Matt. 5:44). Our heavenly Father Himself gives us example, for He makes the sun to shine on the just and the unjust alike. Also, let us remember from the Cross He prayed: “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” We ask God to forgive us in Our Father, and also as we go to confession. Let us remember that Vengeance belongs to God, not to us. A good reminder also is, as Our Lord Jesus Christ was persecuted, so is His Church “And you will be hated by all for my name’s sake” (Matt. 10:22), “They will deliver you up to councils, and you will be beaten in the synagogues” (Mark 13;9), “They will arrest you, and persecute you” (Luke 21:12). For nine centuries Mohammedanism threatened Christian civilization. In the sixteenth century the Mohammedan menace was removed. Then in the 16th c., the Protestant revolt took place, persecuting the Church, the priests, nuns, religious. This terrible event has divided Christendom for centuries, until today.
For the love of God, for the good of saving souls, especially our soul, we ought to often pray for the conversion of those outside the Church, praying with the Good Shepherd for only one Fold!
