Cardinal O'Malley's: Another Funeral, Another Scandal

Raising the flag over Boston's city hall
I've seen a lot of articles about how orthodox Cardinal O'Malley is. Why can't I believe it? As a gramma of 24, two in the womb, I still can't get over the Kennedy funeral extravaganza! A man responsible for the murder of millions of little ones hailed as a Catholic hero, practically canonized in fact. And all blessed by a prince of the Church.

Really?

And now Cardinal O'Malley has done it again. From the Boston Globe - Here are his words from his eulogy homily during a memorial Mass for pro-abort, pro-sodomy Mayor Thomas Menino:

He was a man devoted to his family and to his extended family, the people of Boston (Not poor women being pressured and exploited by the abortion industry!)....
He was very close to the people, especially in times of trouble or tragedy, like the Marathon bombings....He cared deeply for people, especially the poor and disenfranchised (Not the unborn, the most disenfranchised of all!)....
Mayor Menino cared deeply about Boston and its very diverse population, and worked tirelessly to make this city the very best, safe place possible (Sure wasn't safe for babies in the womb!)....
[He was] very faithful to Sunday Mass (Great place for political glad-handing!)...[and had a special devotion to St. Joseph] patron saint of a happy death, having died in the arms of Jesus and Mary. (Also patron of the family. Now what did St. Joseph think about his zeal for murdering the most helpless member of the family? Anyone?...Anyone?)
The Globe continued:
After the Mass, O’Malley spoke briefly to reporters, recalling a visit with Menino to a homeless shelter on a Thanksgiving Day.
“Just to see the kindness and the real concern he had for people — I was very moved by that. It wasn’t a politician going through some kind of ritual,” he said. “He was truly concerned for them. He had that humanity that touched people.” (And the babies being murdered? And the families impacted by his promotion of sodomy? What about them? Curious enthusiasm from a Cardinal of the Church.)
Canon Law covers who can be denied funerals:
Canon 1184 §1. Unless they gave some signs of repentance before death, the following must be deprived of ecclesiastical funerals:
1/ notorious apostates, heretics, and schismatics;
2/ those who chose the cremation of their bodies for reasons contrary to Christian faith;
3/ other manifest sinners who cannot be granted ecclesiastical funerals without public scandal of the faithful.
I'm no canon lawyer, but I can read plain English.  Menino violated Church teaching on sexuality. He was not only pro-abortion, but favored taxpayer funding of abortion which he continued at Boston City Hospital. He approved a condom distribution program in Boston schools and appointed an abortionist to the Boston School Committee. (See here.)  He was also an advocate of same-sex marriage and marched in the Boston gay pride parade every year. (See here.) He's also notorious for flying the gay pride flag over city hall during pride week and has sponsored a transexual prom at city hall.

I realize Cardinal O"Malley was not offering a "funeral Mass" per se, but it seems to me that the scandal of offering a memorial Mass participated in by hundreds of people while Menino lay in state across the street created the same "scandal of the faithful."

With cardinals like O'Malley, what do you think will happen at the family synod next year? Thomas Menino was an enemy of the family. He not only attacked unborn children, he corrupted born children. Think of all the students in Boston's schools impacted by his promotion of safe sex programs, condom distribution, and genderqueer proms. O'Malley's effusive praise for this man who got away with massive child abuse makes his attack of Bishop Finn look disingenuous! I think pharisee is an appropriate description of the "humble Franciscan."

  1. Spot on criticism of Cardinal O'Malley and Menino. As a Boston native I can attest that Sean O'Malley is not orthodox. He is a political prelate.

  2. I'm listening to a book on tape, the biography of Catherine of Siena by Sigrid Undset. I think Catherine would have had some hard words for the Cardinal.

  3. It is stunning isn't it? Men who have spent their entire adult lives as priests and have risen to clerical heights, behave like the whitened sepulchres Jesus excoriated....and they don't have a clue. Or maybe they are just as arrogant as the politicians. Or perhaps they despise Church teaching. Or maybe they cannot see beyond the government's silver. Shame on them.

  4. His Eminence's speech reminds me of when the late Gov. William D. Schaefer of MD died a few years ago. Quite a number of Protestant ministers were gushing about him during the funeral service!
