As a Beekeeper I enjoyed this Ad...

....but didn't order the book. (See ad here.)  It might be a good book, but, I'm not interested since I have a similar book already, although I was fascinated to read all the health benefits of honey. Many of them I knew about, but to see a long list of the benefits of eating raw honey made me smile. My husband and I drink tea and honey every night. And now I can pat myself on the back and say I'm doing something great for my health. Here's some of what the ad claims:
Honey contains a concentrated dose of vitamins, minerals and nutrients that nourish and re-vitalize your body. And it possesses unique antimicrobial properties that help you fight off infections.

Throughout history, honey has been used to treat...
  • Coughs
  • Wounds
  • Indigestion
  • Skin infections
  • Fatigue
  • Flu's
  • Burns
  • And more!
For example, honey was the most popular ancient Egyptian healing remedy (and was mentioned over 500 times in 900 remedies.)
Hippocrates (the father of modern medicine) used honey as a treatment for pain, dehydration, and fever. And this isn't just some "folk remedy" discredited by modern science either. Researchers (in thousands of peer-reviewed papers) continue to uncover just how healing honey can be.
Reading this came at a good time for me. We have visiting grandkids. One of them was coughing a lot last night so I rubbed his chest and back with Vicks before bed and gave him a cough drop. I'm kicking myself for not giving him a spoonful of honey. If he's coughing tonight we'll go for the honey treatment and see if it really does give cough relief. Some studies show that honey works better than over-the-counter cough syrups. Is it any wonder God promised His chosen people a land "flowing with milk and honey?"

Knowing how good honey is makes me love my girls more than ever! They are hard workers out collecting pollen already and they will work hard when the nectar flow starts. I've love visiting the bee yard and just sitting watching them bring in the pollen and dance on the landing board.

Are you interested in beekeeping? You can read my Beekeeping Diary here. I keep it for myself so I can follow the progress of our hives: what works and what doesn't, how much we're feeding, how old the queens are, whether we've had a swarm, what kind of pest control is needed, etc. You're welcome to visit my page. And if you're considering becoming a back yard beekeeper, I can personally testify that it's fun and challenging! If you live near the north Shenandoah Valley, you are welcome to come visit for a practical lesson and demo in beekeeping.

  1. From California,

Mary Anne and friends, I do not sweeten my tea, but you have inspired me to try it in my coffee since I usually put sugar and milk in my coffee. I like the honey in it. It really does not change the flavor for me but sweetens it just right.

If you want a good cough remedy, warm two parts of honey to one part lemon in a cup in the microwave or a pan on the stove and drink it. Just be careful you do not drink it when it is too hot. Then put Vick's vapor rub under the nose at night or use a humidifier.

I rarely get a cold, though, because I use zinc (Zicam or store brand) when I am first exposed, or when I feel I am getting one. I do not even use it as much as in on the label -- sometimes just in the morning and at night. You can use whatever works for you. Too much of the spray type can affect the sense of smell according to my pharmacist, so use that sparingly. I do not think the tablets would do that.

  2. Thanks for the recommendations. I'll try them next time I get a cold. But it's been a long time even with a suppressed immune system so the honey must be working. :)
